Many people have a visual experience in states of deep relaxation while meditating, dancing, getting a massage, prayer, or just before sleep as the brain quiets. I have always believed it is when all the mental static of life begins to fall away and our mind and body begins to rest and restore. It is necessary for me to have a daily practice of meditation or dancing with eyes closed to find the colorful still place within. Lately it is more challenging to settle into relaxation and yet I know it is even more necessary for me to find these moments of mental quiet while our country navigates the challenges ahead.
There is also an iris reminding me that what I take in visually through the media impacts me significantly and must be processed for my mental and physical health. I must find a place of grounding within me.
This piece attempts to visually explore the mental clutter as it begins to break up and fall away. One challenge for me can be looping thoughts that my mind doesn’t want to let go of it feels like my brain is on fire. As I move into relaxation the colors I experience soften and begin to shift towards violet, pinks and blues. Embroidering these loops was satisfying and relaxing. Creativity can also be healing and restorative as artists move into a creative space.
The center circle began with a black and white dyed cloth it felt too stark and did not play well with the background dyed cloth, to soften it while keeping the appearance of mental static visible I layered a dyed silk organza over it.
Calming the mind through activities that inspire deep relaxation is good for us emotionally, physically and spiritually. Finding stillness is the change that begins with me and within me it is important for me now more than ever Peace.
