When the ‘Change of Language’ prompt was given, my first thought went to a small notebook that I kept near my computer recently while I was working on a Masters degree in Painting.  Early into the program, I realized that we would be covering many topics that I had not anticipated – politics, philosophy, history, religion, psychology, economics, among others.  All of this exposure helped me to grow in understanding of art and artists’ motivating forces. I thought I already had a pretty good command of the English language, but in discussions, research, and reading for various classes, I kept bumping into words that stumped me!  Finally, I began writing these challenging words and their meanings in my little book.  I chose to highlight some of my newly developed language in this work. 

I had to make this piece three different times.  I wanted to use a glue resist technique with dye and lettering stencils.  My first attempt looked great until I rinsed out the dyes and realized that I had used a fabric blend rather than pure cotton.  I was disappointed in the dull color that remained, although I will still use this fabric in a future project.  I was surprised that the letters ended up being dark, as I expected them to remain white.

On the second try, I stenciled the words onto a 100% cotton sheet.  I didn’t realize at first that it had a white on white elegant design, but I thought this would enhance the work, as these are fancy words on a fancy fabric.  Once the glue dried, I applied dye and let it batch for a few hours.  This time, when the dye was rinsed out, so was the glue, and I had a beautiful dyed fabric, but no trace of any letters anywhere. 

Finally, I used the dyed sheet and stenciled the words with black fabric paint.  All of the stenciling was exhausting, because I had the fabrics taped to my cutting table and had to bend over, and reach, and try not to pounce too much medium or slop it outside the letter shapes. 

Each letter was hand stitched with embroidery floss to outline it, and the background designs were hand quilted with white thread.

From my notebook:  esoteric – likely to be understood by only a small number of people with specialized knowledge or interest.  I decided this would be a good title.  A few others from my list: hermeneutic, moribund, enigmatic, orthagonal, spurious, epistemology, penultimate, eponymous, unary, punctum, luxate, nemological, ingenium, and soteriology.  Truly, it was like learning a new language.

難解 「言語の変更」というプロンプトが出たとき、最初に思い浮かんだのは、絵画の修士号取得に向けて勉強していたときにコンピューターのそばに置いていた小さなノートでした。プログラムが始まってすぐに、政治、哲学、歴史、宗教、心理学、経済など、予想していなかった多くのトピックを扱うことになると気づきました。こうした経験のおかげで、アートやアーティストの原動力に対する理解が深まりました。英語はもうかなり使いこなせると思っていたのですが、さまざまな授業でのディスカッション、調査、読書で、何度もつまずく単語に遭遇しました。ついに、これらの難しい単語とその意味を小さなノートに書き始めました。この作品では、新たに開発した言語のいくつかを強調することにしました。 この作品は3回作らなければなりませんでした。染料とレタリングステンシルを使った接着剤防染技法を使用したかったのです。最初の試みは、染料を洗い流して、純綿ではなく混紡生地を使ったことに気付くまでは、素晴らしい出来でした。くすんだ色が残ってがっかりしましたが、この布は今後のプロジェクトでも使うつもりです。文字は白のままだと思っていたので、結局暗くなって驚きました。 2 回目の試みでは、100% コットンのシートに文字をステンシルしました。最初はエレガントなデザインだとは思いませんでしたが、これは派手な布に派手な文字を印刷したものなので、作品を引き立てると思いました。接着剤が乾いたら、染料を塗って数時間放置しました。今回は、染料が洗い流されると接着剤も洗い流され、美しい染色布ができましたが、文字の跡はどこにもありませんでした。 最後に、染色したシートを使用して、黒の布用塗料で文字をステンシルしました。ステンシル作業はどれも疲れました。布を裁断台にテープで貼り付けていたので、かがんだり手を伸ばしたり、染料をあまり飛び散らさないようにしたり、文字の形からはみ出さないようにしたりしなければならなかったからです。 各文字は刺繍糸で手縫いして輪郭を描き、背景のデザインは白い糸で手縫いしました。 私のノートから：難解 – 専門知識や関心を持つ少数の人しか理解できない可能性が高い。これが良いタイトルだと判断しました。私のリストからいくつか挙げると：解釈学、瀕死、謎、直交、偽、認識論、最後から二番目の、名詞、単項、点、脱臼、名詞学的、インジェニウム、救済論。本当に、新しい言語を学ぶようなものでした。 難解 40” x 31” 手染め、手縫い
