A long list of terrible disasters is written into the history of Japan.
There have always been earthquakes, volcanoes, typhoons, floods, fires and war.
Now a terrible epidemic has arrived that envelops the entire world population.
When I think about disasters, the first thing that comes to mind is
“white rice balls.”
Yes, before the government can bring relief, the people of each community prepare “white rice balls” for the victims.
This simple food, cooked rice sprinkled with salt holding a dried plum inside and wrapped in green seaweed, has brought hope and caring to overcome many disasters.
Filling our stomachs is a great force to help us return to daily life.
It is our symbol of cooperation and sharing.

That is such a creative take on this theme. Rice balls must be like “peanut butter and jelly sandwiches” in the US. A basic, emergency and comfort food. Plus, this is great use of contrast and design.
This is so lovely Mikiko! I really appreciate the overall view and then detail photo! You get different information from a distance then you do up close. I love it when that happens with a quilt. Great story too!
What a beautiful piece this is—great design, great story. It makes me want to visit Japan and learn more about a culture that seems to find such beauty in simple things.
What a clever and beautiful quilt and tradition this is, Micky. Thank you for sharing it with us. I love the way you built the rice balls and pieced the container. And your hand quilting is appreciated too.
これはなんて巧妙で美しいキルトで伝統なんだ、ミッキー。 私たちと共有してくれてありがとう。 おにぎりを作って容器をつぎはぎする方法が大好き。 手のキルトも気に入ってます。
thank you very much.
What a wonderful tradition. Thanks for informing us.
This is a lovely commemoration of a loving community practice. As well as a great quilt
Beautiful, Mikiko
Lovely Mikki. So emotive and a perfect way to express cooperation and sharing in the Japanese culture.
