Media has a mostly positive connotation for me. I think of my love of books and print magazines and newspapers. For example we get the Sunday New York Times, and I read it all during the week.

I listen to podcasts and audible books and music and use my phone for emails, texts, Facebook and Instagram. And I love good TV series, from The Wire and the Sopranos and Madmen to Ozark, The Good Fight and Broadchurch.

It is integral to my life and is intertwined with my thoughts.

My first idea was to create a quilt with the idea of watching TV together. I remember the days when I would plan my week around reserving “Mary Tyler Moore” night, or “M*A*S*H”night. I loved to discuss an especially good episode the next day.

I wanted to bring my favorite characters together again, watching TV together.  This was my maquette – like a little sketch.

I consulted with my “SAQA legal consultant” Dorothy, who suggested I write to “Permissions” at each network to get the go ahead to use the images of my characters. I did so, but only got a positive response for The Good Wife and the Mary Tyler Moore Show.

I proceeded to make a quilt, called “All Together” using those images.

But after it was completed I decided I didn’t like it.

So I started all over again with the more abstract idea of how sounds and images worm their way into our lives.

The Fabric of Our Lives
