For the months of February and March, Cloth in Common members will be considering the word ‘shame.’  This is a hard theme to think about!! Here are a few of my notes from a quick online search of the word ‘shame’:

A painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by the consciousness of wrong or foolish behavior.  Disgrace, condemnation, inadequacy, dishonor, worthlessness, cultural devaluation, social stress.  Transgression of rules or standards that sets one apart from the group.  Mortification, social awkwardness, loss of esteem in the eyes of others, public humiliation, negative judgement by others. 

Among the items I read about shame was the opinion that animals don’t experience shame.  I would disagree.  Our dog, Cindy, certainly projected shame a few times – once when she came home with a Kentucky Fried Chicken box stuck around her neck, then there was the time she was arrested for stealing a loaf of bread from the corner store.  She also would often seem embarrassed immediately after a haircut. 

I’m not sure how to proceed with this theme, but I’m thinking of a portrait expressing shame, or possibly a different approach – as in “what a shame!”

2月と3月の間、Cloth in Commonのメンバーは「恥」という言葉を検討します。これは考えるのが難しいテーマです！ 「恥」という単語をオンラインですばやく検索したときのメモをいくつか紹介します。
間違った行動や愚かな行動の意識によって引き起こされる屈辱や苦痛の痛みを伴う感覚。恥辱、非難、不十分さ、不名誉、無価値、文化的切り下げ、社会的ストレス。グループとは一線を画すルールや基準の違反。屈辱、社会的ぎこちなさ、他人の目から見た尊敬の喪失、公の屈辱、他人による否定的な判断。
私が恥について読んだ項目の中には、動物は恥を経験しないという意見がありました。私は同意しません。私たちの犬、シンディは確かに何度か恥をかき立てました。ケンタッキーフライドチキンの箱を首に巻いて帰宅したとき、角の店から一斤のパンを盗んだとして逮捕されたときがありました。彼女はまた、散髪直後に恥ずかしそうに見えることがよくありました。
このテーマをどのように進めるかはわかりませんが、「なんて恥ずかしい」のように、恥を表現する肖像画、またはおそらく別のアプローチを考えています。
