It’s my turn to write a few lines about our current theme ‘Lines’.  We’ll be revealing our completed art pieces in just a few days, so I need to keep mine a surprise.  I thought I would talk about what I’ve been doing quilt wise recently, since it is different than my usual art quilts. 

I’ve been on a school break since the end of November, and I managed to get wrangled into making a mystery quilt.  Bonnie Hunter, a brilliant draftsperson who loves scrappy quilts has been creating and sharing mystery quilts for many years.  In 2010, I jumped in and made this one, which she titled, “Roll, Roll, Cotton Boll”.  I loved the quilt and as you can see it is currently on my bed.  Bonnie selects a color scheme, which you are welcome to use or change as you wish.  She then gives you one clue each week until it is time for the big reveal.  A clue might be to make 172 four patches.  You are welcome to make them all, or just a few, or print out the instructions and save for later.  I chose to make just a few of each clue, but then it took me until 2019 to finish this quilt!! 

So at the end of November of 2022, I decided to give another mystery a try.  This time, I was determined to make all the pieces and keep up – and I DID!  Every week, I managed to finish the assigned number of pieces.   By mid-January, I had a completed quilt top.  This one is titled “Chilhowie”. 

There were a couple of weeks that I had finished the clue by Tuesday, and had to wait until Friday for the next clue.  I was browsing Bonnie’s website (https://quiltville.blogspot.com/) and came across a quilt called Scrappy Trails.  I was drawn to the design, and read that it required a lot of 2.5” strips.  At first I thought, “I don’t have enough strips to even get started.” Then I remembered my box of leftover binding strips, most of which are 2.5”!!  I have been quilting for MANY years, and have saved LOTS of extra binding strips.  So, in December, I began pressing those bindings and piecing a scrappy Trip around the world quilt top.  It went together fairly easily, and today, I managed to finish a Queen size quilt.  Sadly, I have no leftover binding strips left to bind it with, but having plenty of other fabric, I made some scrappy binding, and will be hand stitching it to this quilt tonight!  So, in a matter of two months, I have completed one Queen size quilt and a second King size quilt top.

For years, I taught traditional piecing and made many bed quilts.  In recent years, I have only made art quilts.  Apparently, I missed my traditional roots!  It was fun getting back into measuring and putting those block puzzles together. 

To get back to the lines topic, I chose to quilt the Scrappy Trips with just straight lines – partly to finish quickly, and also to not add more chaos to an already busy quilt.
