– Round Three

Cloth in Common originated in 2017.  For our first cycle, we agreed to work with ‘Unusual’ prompts, like sound, and kitchen, and disunity.   In 2019, we transitioned to Round Two, and our themes all related to ‘Community’.  Little did we know how our communities would change in 2020!  And now, here we are in 2021, and beginning Round Three.  We’ve discussed overall themes, and we have decided upon ‘Structures’ as our focus for the next two years. 

The theme ‘Structures’ brings to mind: buildings, bridges, machines, cells, plants, playgrounds, how things are engineered. But it can also refer to not just actual physical structures. It can mean routines, hierarchies, family structure, social frameworks, etc. 

It is my turn to issue the prompt for the next art quilts.  Because I love making portraits, I’ve decided we’ll begin with the structure of ‘Faces’.   However, it need not be a human face.  According to Wikipedia, “Anything which is the forward or world-facing part of a system which has internal structure is considered its ‘face’, like the façade of a building. “

One might investigate caricature, expression, exaggeration, abstract or mask like faces, or animal faces.  There are also clock faces, face cards, face time, etc. 

I look forward, as always, to seeing what results from the minds of twelve brilliant artists from twelve different places and with a myriad of experiences and ideas.
