One of the most common, yet hopefully perfect compromises is marriage. Two people with different expectations, needs and life experiences bring their lives together bit by bit. Coming from two directions they merge and have to compromise. The best marriages are those that find that perfect combination of compromises.

This quilt started out with a piece of hand painted fabric which was then overprinted with two thermofax screens created with wordclouds of words depicting compromise and marriage

A traditional quilt pattern called Double Wedding Rings was the basis for the overlay design. The traditional melon shapes are usually segmented painstakingly pieced but I took a contemporary shortcut and cut the arcs from two gradations of hand painted fabric which were then fused to Mistyfuse.

These were fused to the background starting with incomplete rings at two the sides until the fully joined in the centre.

Quilting the rings first in a circular design and then the background in ¼” diagonal lines from each side until they met and crossed in the centre

I have created a more detailed video of the complete process for making this quilt as part of my Quilt Story series. Please check it out HERE

  1. Love this quilt and your video! The text adds so much – makes me wish I had a thermofax machine. The birdsongs in the background of the video also made me want to travel to Australia to hear them. Beautiful quilt and so evocative of marriage and compromise. Thanks for sharing!
