Undergrowth with Two Figures

I first thought of “slow down!” When I heard the prompt was Change of Pace.  I thought everyone would be thinking the same thing!  The pace of our lives can be frenetic.

But for me change of pace does mean slowing down and trying to bring the right side of my brain into focus. The left side is full of linear thinking: I must do this, then this, then this, but first, this!

I’ve been working on a series of Master copies, mostly of Van Gogh and Matisse.  I looked through my books to find an inspiration piece that would represent “change of pace – slowing down.”

I found it. It is a painting by Van Gogh called Undergrowth with Two Figures, done in 1890. The figures meld into the forest.  They move slowly, leaning toward each other. They are quiet. They are almost at one with the woods.

It was perfect.  I changed the orientation, but I tried to keep the feeling of the piece in my quilt.

I used stamping, rubbings and various techniques on the tree bark. Closer inspection of the figures revealed that the woman has her arm linked through the man’s.  I kept Van Gogh’s treatment of the faces vague.  “Any man” and “any woman.”  It makes it easier to project yourself into this isolated and peaceful surrounding.

最初に思いついたのは「ゆっくり！」 私が聞いたときのプロンプトはチェンジ・オブ・ペースでした。 みんなも同じこと思ってるだろうなって思ってた！ 私たちの生活のペースは目まぐるしく変化することがあります。

実際、私たちは皆、何か違うことを考えていました – いつもそうしています

しかし、私にとってペースを変えるということは、ペースを落とし、右脳に焦点を当てようとすることを意味します。 左側は直線的な思考でいっぱいです。「これをしなければならない、次にこれをしなければならない、そしてそれをしなければならない、でも最初にこれをしなければならない！」というものです。

私は主にゴッホとマティスのマスターコピーのシリーズに取り組んできました。 私は自分の本を調べて、「ペースの変化 – スローダウン」を表すインスピレーションとなる作品を見つけました。

見つけた。 これは、1890 年に描かれたファン ゴッホの「二人の人物と下生え」という絵画です。人物は森に溶け込んでいます。 彼らはゆっくりと動き、お互いに寄りかかります。 彼らは静かです。 彼らは森とほぼ一体になっている。

完璧でした。 方向は変えましたが、作品の雰囲気をキルトに残すように努めました。

樹皮にスタンプやラビングなど様々な技法を使いました。 人物を詳しく調べたところ、女性は男性たちを介して腕をつながれていることが判明した。 私はゴッホの顔の扱いを曖昧にしておきました。 「どんな男性でも」「どんな女性でも」。 この孤立した平和な環境に自分自身を投影しやすくなります。
