For years now, I have attended a spring fiber artist retreat in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.  Sometimes for a week, sometimes for 11 days, sometimes with a class or two, sometimes just to retreat and work on projects. The venue is unbelievably perfect.  Lots of studios to play in, boardwalks through the woods, hotel like rooms, and a short ride to the Atlantic beach to welcome the sun each day.  A fabulous chef feeds us healthy and delicious meals, and we join together for happy hour each evening.  I’ve met so many terrific people here through the years. We have all learned and been enriched by spending time together here. Sadly, this event is in danger of happening no more, for various reasons. 

When I began thinking about neighborhoods, I thought of people. Then I thought of horses, cows and goats, who are my real neighbors.  And trees.  While searching through some old photos, I came across a collection from our precious retreat.  There was a snapshot I took on the boardwalk.  Five artists, heading back to the studios from the Commons area, having attended happy hour, then supper.  One artist had picked up a roll of toilet tissue for her room. 

These are the people I would love to have as neighbors!  We consider ourselves neighbors, while we are there together at the retreat.  And since I have few actual neighbors here in the woods where I live, I decided to feature my retreat neighbors in my neighborhood quilt.  And now I have a happy visual memory of some of the dear friends I’ve made at our retreat. 

As I usually do, I pulled some fabrics from shirts, skirts, and dresses for this piece.  Here are some dated progress images:

Mar 6   Still some tweaking needed on facial features, and
the floor was bothering me.  The angles on the boards were wrong. 

Mar 23 Adding a wider stripe seems to help.  Still some
detail work needed before beginning the quilting! 
And our deadline is looming!!

Today, March 29, the quilt is quilted, bound, photographed,
and ready to reveal.  Here is a detail shot:

Although this quilt shows Linda, Sheilana, Pamela, Rosie and Jacque, it represents many other dear artist friends who have experienced the joy of our fiber retreat, as well as Mary, who has organized it and kept it vital all these years.

私はここ数年、フロリダ州ニュースミルナビーチで、春の繊維アーティストのリトリートに参加してきました。1週間、11日間、時には1～2日間、時には退社してプロジェクトに取り組む。会場は信じられないほど完璧だ。遊ぶスタジオもたくさんあり、遊牧場は森の中を歩き、部屋のようなホテルを歩き、毎日太陽を迎えに大西洋のビーチまで短時間で行く。素晴らしいシェフが私たちに健康的でおいしい食事をくれ、私たちは毎晩幸せな時間を共に過ごす。私はここで何年もの間素晴らしい人々に会ってきた私たちは皆、ここで一緒に過ごすことで学び、豊かになってきた。悲しいことに、この出来事はいろいろな理由でもう起こらない危険にさらされている。

近所のことを考え始めた時、私は人のことを考えました。それから、私は、私の本当の隣人である馬や牛やヤギを思い浮かべました。木も。古い写真を探しながら、私たちの貴重な隠れ家からコレクションを見つけた。私が遊歩道で撮ったスナップショットがあった。5人のアーティストが、コモンズ地区からスタジオに戻り、幸せな時間に出席し、夕食をとった。あるアーティストが、自分の部屋のトイレ用のティッシュを1巻き拾った。

私が隣人として望むのはこの人たちだ！退路に向かう間は隣人と見なす。私の住む森の中には、実際の近所の人がほとんどいないので、近所のキルトに隠れ家の近所の人たちを紹介しようと思いました。そして今、私は隠れ家で作った親友達の幸せな視覚的記憶を持っている。
普段通り、私はこの作品のために、シャツやスカート、ドレスから織物を引っ張った。次に、日付のある進捗イメージを示します。
このキルトはリンダ、シーラナ、パメラ、ロージー、ジャックなどを紹介しているが、この作品は、繊維リトリートの楽しみを体験した他の多くの愛好家の友人や、今までずっと重要な活動を続けてきたメアリーを代表している。
