Lines, 3-10
Bent and Reflected, Martha Ressler
Lines get even more interesting when they are bent by shadows and reflections.
I took a picture of windows with curtains and very interesting lines bent by shadow. I combined them with a photo of a reflection on a shiny metal surface. (This was while listening to a jazz concert on a Viking cruise ship!)
I created a collage in Photoshop and sent it off to Fabric on Demand to print.
For the quilt I ordered some nice complementary bluish fabric from Cherrywood and added some raw edge appliqued lines. Then both machine and hand quilted the whole thing.

The combination of the two printed fabrics is very successful, I find it so hard to incorporate photos into quilt but you definitely nailed it. The pieces is very interesting and I love how you observed your immediate surroundings and made wonderful art from that.
Actually it’s a whole cloth quilt — only one printed piece. I did my “piecing” in photo shop. The blue and white pointy pieces are appliqued on tho.
Martha, I find the multi-directional lines and the shadowed effect of the sheer curtains, giving hints of what is behind them, is both revealing and also has the effect of veiling the deeper items within the quilt. It is subtle and enticing.
Very clever way you have made this piece, Martha. Its lovely!
I like the way you merged two different images! Beautiful results. My favorite is your hand stitching. What is the finished size? Such variety and complexity! Beautiful work.
Hm, my dimensions etc didn’t show up. I must still be doing something wrong. Grrr. 40 x 30″
Martha, you share an exciting and deliberate focus on contemporary art. Combined with your skills and the photos that inspired, you have brought us a really special new piece to explore..
Thanks Bethany. I always appreciate your thoughts and perspective.
