A short time after my 18th birthday, I went to vote for the first time. I never missed an election since then, not once. How important this right had been for me hit me like a brick when I couldn’t vote after we moved to the USA. The emigration took my Right, and voice, away for 10 years.

Our political system is a democracy, but quite a bit different from what I knew, I soon felt the need to catch up on American History. For the past 4 years, I have been reading the daily “Letters from an American” by Heather Cox Richardson, a renowned history professor. Not only has she backfilled my lack of knowledge, but also offered a levelheaded summary of our current political scene. What stuck out for me is, Democracy is messy and fragile! It entrusts us Rights, and we must participate to contribute.

My work is purposely looking chaotic, just as “We The People” are in our multitude of adherences to political colorations. There is a major divide between, and the media likes to sort us into either one or the other, pit us against each other. The truth is, there is always a bit of “The Other” within.

The upcoming year will be filled with polls, headlines, talks and hyped “Election News”. The actual problem is the NON-voter. People who feel disenfranchised, kept out of the process because of where they live, what’s the color of their skin, how much money or influence they have. Gerrymandering voting districts has been used to split populations into diminished proportions. Misinformation is strewn to sew distrust in the system, or just as the latest election showed as a predominantly black voter district blankly “run out” of ballots. The 2010 Citizen United decision opened the floodgates to Big Money, manipulating our electorate.

Waiting in Congress is a bill, the “John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act”, ready to become law. It would Restore Voting Rights and rid our country of many ills around elections. This seems the pressing issue with our politically divided Nation.

I have learned that the right to vote is NOT a given.
