I was thinking about the new (to me) phenomenon of people claiming gender identities other than male and female. I started out with that as my quilt theme. But my quilt turned out more about sexual orientation. Which is not so unusual anymore. “Gay” and “lesbian,” at least in my corner of the world, have become widely accepted. Gender non-conformity had defeated me visually!

I had just bought a new plaque for the powder room in my home — the traditional male & female sign. As I passed it every day, I began to think whether I could have some fun with it. Mix those figures up a bit and make them move a little. Since I was going to play, I decided to use bright primary and secondary colors, and do some piecing.

I eventually came up with:
