My Cloth in Common works are based on my trip from New Zealand to Canada and the USA in 2019. How lucky was I to do this last year and not 2020? Anyway, when we received the prompt of Media for this round I wondered how I would apply this to my trip. When I sat back and thought about it for a time, I realised my whole trip was based on media! Firstly I had to organise flights and accommodation so of course that was via the internet! I was lucky enough to be selected to teach in Canada which meant some of my costs were covered so then there were emails back and forth to finalise the flights and accommodation as well as needs lists for the classes. All much easier in today’s world with electronic media than when my parents went to Canada in 1968. Then they had paper tickets, a travel agent had to organise everything and of course Traveller’s cheques for their money. For me it was my credit card! Things are so much simpler these days!
Following on from organising my trip was the media I encountered on my trip! Its a long way from Christchurch, New Zealand to Toronto, Canada so I was checking flight details as I went on my in-plane screen at my seat. It told me all sorts of things about distance and time and the closer I got to Toronto I followed the map to see things as we landed.
Throughout the trip we were looking up places to go on the internet, using Google Maps a lot and doing online bookings. And to finish I used my phone to take about 3500 images of everywhere I had been which I am using as my inspiration for this Cloth in Common series. So we use media in every aspect of life these days and now to determine how I will express that in cloth!
I can’t wait to see what you come up with. I love having access to so much digital information. I remember carrying to United Airlines route book with me. It was a smallish book that listed all the flights and times. I hope I saved one in all the junk I have saved over the years. But the one thing I miss with digital flight data is the sound of the Solari boards changing. When I heard the clickety-clack, I knew to look up from my book to check to see if my flight was boarding.
