Connections

Artists have made connections to past artists for centuries by making Master Copies. I first tried this using a painting of Van Gogh’s I saw in the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, Field of Auvers, years ago. It was so successful that I re-created it several times.

For this current challenge I chose Lady in a Blue Hat by Matisse. I liked the boldness of the outline of the hat, and wanted to interpret it in fabric.

This one will fit into a body of work I am creating for a solo show in August called “Van Gogh is in Stitches.” Many of those works will be master copies of Van Gogh and Matisse.
Perhaps these are not master copies in the traditional sense, since I am doing them in a very different medium. But still you end up observing the original work very closely, and can almost read the artist’s mind regarding certain choices he made.
There is no question of copyright when an artist has been dead for 70 years, as both Matisse and Van Gogh have been.

マティスの後の青い帽子の貴婦人

アーティストはマスターコピーを作成することで、何世紀にもわたって過去のアーティストとのつながりを築いてきました。 私が最初にこれを試したのは、何年も前にピッツバーグのオーヴェール畑にあるカーネギー美術館で見たゴッホの絵でした。 とてもうまくいったので、何度か作り直しました。
今回の課題では、マティスの『青い帽子をかぶった女性』を選びました。 帽子の輪郭の大胆さが気に入ったので、それを生地で表現したいと思いました。
この作品は、8月の個展「Van Gogh is in Stitches」に向けて制作中の一連の作品に組み込まれる予定です。 それらの作品の多くは、ゴッホやマティスのマスターコピーになります。
おそらくこれらは、私が全く異なる媒体で制作しているので、伝統的な意味でのマスターコピーではないのでしょう。 それでも、最終的にはオリジナルの作品を注意深く観察することになり、アーティストが行った特定の選択に関する彼の心をほとんど読み取ることができます。
マティスもゴッホもそうだったように、芸術家が亡くなって70年が経つと、著作権の問題はありません。
