When looking at heritage as a prompt there were several options for me to consider from family, history, lineage to the loss of our historical buildings through our earthquakes. However as I looked at each it came to me that everything has layers of history past, present and future.
Looking at our city as it rebuilds from the major earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 I look at what is there today – new builds! Modern, different architecture and for the children of today all they have ever known. They never saw the beautiful roman architecture of the Basilica that has now been totally removed – they will only see the new church in its place.
Its the same with families – we know the current members but not our ancestors or those that come after us. Therefore I thought I should represent the layers of heritage we have regardless of the type of heritage. In doing so I looked at older houses that have been wall papered time and again. If you peel back the layers of paper it will review the choices of those before us.
These photos hopefully represent the peeling back of the layers of history behind everything. I wonder what choices will be added in the future? What will the trends be? What will the walls have seen?

Catherine, you have touched on so many thoughts that ran through my mind with this prompt. The forgotten, and yet all that is what we only know now. Truly a deliberate, beautiful and thoughtful sharing of your art!
