Les Cathédrales

During our camper holiday in Spain, we visited the north coast.  The most famous beaches are internationally known As Catedrais, the beach of the cathedrals. The name is due to the characteristic arched rock formations. Some are broken under the intense activity of the sea.

this image is my inspiration

A visit at high tide can be done from the top of the cliff with caution. But then you don’t see the beauty of the rocks. That is only possible at low tide and so you can also walk on the beach. You walk down a flight of stairs to the finest sandy beach. Only so can you see the grandeur of the impressive arcades. I really enjoyed the various colors and shapes of the rock and the vegetation. The water causes algae growth on the rocks at high tide. At low tide, special plants have the space to grow. How flexible must nature be to withstand the tides. This results in a unique piece of nature. The sea constantly erases the traces of the past, but the succession of arches and rocks remains. The resulting images show a bit of emotion of extraordinary moments. This area falls under the category of geological monuments.

I used my most beautiful photo as inspiration for this quilt.

I painted the background myself.  I imitated the vegetation by painting lutradur and then processing it with the heat gun. To get more body, I laid acrylic yarn in loops on a surface and sewn it on.

To get more transparency, I painted thin synthetic fabric green and also made it even more transparent with the heat gun. Making a composition, after the photo was easy.

But quilting the rock formation was still quite a challenge. All in all a very challenging quilt road with trial and error. I am of course very satisfied with the end result.

  1. You brought a lot of philosophy to bear on this work, and with your skills — you’ve really achieved something special. I expect to see this is some upcoming SAQA exhibition — somehow — somewhere!

  2. This is stunning, you do justice to you inspiration photo. The 3-D elements work very well!
