I’ve been working on art and writing for a Masters degree recently.  The subject is violence. Of particular concern to me when I began this work was the invasion of Ukraine and the surfeit of gun violence in the United States. Finally focusing on solutions took me back to early Bible lessons, including one of the ten commandments –  Love thy neighbor.  If we could just be more considerate of others and less selfish, it would solve so many of the problems we are experiencing. 

I chose to work with complementary colors of blue-green and reds, pinks and oranges.  Many of my fabrics come from shirts, pants, dresses, and skirts, so I have irregularly shaped scraps. 

A random background of various values of the blue-green was assembled, and then handstitched to a piece of batting.  Standing back, I started seeing human figures in the shapes. I imagined that with a bit of tweaking, I could see two neighbors arm in arm (abstract, of course, but they were there).

I found a font I liked and created a stabilized muslin pattern for the letters, which were then patchworked from the warm color fabrics. 

Once all the pieces were hand stitched on I was able to machine quilt the entire work.  Finally, I couched some yarn to outline the neighbors and then added a bit of trim at top and bottom. 

If only this advice were heeded, then peace could be restored in the world.  We need to find ways to get along with one another.

隣人を愛してください 最近、修士号取得に向けてアートと執筆に取り組んでいます。 主題は暴力です。 この仕事を始めたときに私が特に懸念したのは、ウクライナ侵略と米国における銃暴力の多さでした。 最終的に解決策に焦点を当てた結果、私は十戒の一つである「汝の隣人を愛せよ」など、聖書の初期の教訓に戻りました。 もし私たちが他人に対してもっと思いやりを持ち、利己心をなくすことができれば、私たちが経験している多くの問題は解決するでしょう。 私は青緑と赤、ピンク、オレンジの補色を使って作品を作ることにしました。 私の生地の多くはシャツ、パンツ、ドレス、スカートに由来するため、不規則な形の端切れが発生します。 さまざまな値の青緑のランダムな背景が組み立てられ、中綿に手縫いで縫い付けられました。 後ろに立ってみると、人の形が見え始めました。 少し調整すれば、隣に住む二人が腕を組んでいるのが見えるのではないかと想像しました（もちろん抽象的ですが、彼らはそこにいたのです）。 気に入ったフォントを見つけて、安定したモスリンの文字パターンを作成し、暖色系の生地でパッチワークしました。 すべてのピースを手縫いしたら、作品全体をミシンでキルティングすることができました。 最後に、糸をかけて隣り合う部分の輪郭を描き、上下に少しトリムを加えました。 この忠告さえ心に留めておけば、世界に平和が回復するでしょう。 私たちはお互いに仲良くやっていく方法を見つける必要があります。 衣類、糸、商用トリムからアップサイクルされた生地 49×30.5インチ ハンドアップリケ、ミシンキルティング
