Thinking back on the last year, I was struck by the hundreds of meetings and meet-ups via video conferencing apps that have provided a window into our colleagues’ studios. The firewall between our social lives and our studio lives has been blurred. From lavish views, cathedral ceilings, and expansive libraries to closet-sized cubbies, bedroom corners, and kitchen tables, each of us has claimed a space to create that has now been visible to others. Sometimes its difficult to concentrate on the meeting at hand as we’re busy peering into those studios, checking out the amazing art on the walls, scanning book titles to see what we need to add to our own collection, or envying fabric storage systems.

Some have opted for virtual backgrounds, others have redecorated, still others have put up a curtain. Live streams, webinars and social media stories have had entire segments dedicated to virtual studio tours. Virtual meetings have opened a whole new window allowing us to connect with artists and their studios from the comfort of our homes. Here’s a window into my studio.

Our prompt “Doors openings and portals” has struck a chord with our Cloth in Common members. I’m excited to share my abstract “window” piece and I can’t wait to see how everyone else has interpreted the prompt to be revealed at the end of May.

  1. I am fascinated by the travel through many eye-opening portals that draw me into your new work here, Susan. Colour, definition, and the innate design play representing movement are strategically placed to speak to your viewer.
