During the Covid 19 lockdown many people wanted to do something to help. We all feel helpless just sitting at home waiting for it to pass. One of the ways many found to feel like they were helping was to make masks as they were suddenly in short supply. The internet was flooded with different patterns, techniques, suggestions for ways to make them and who they were sending them too. One site I subscribed to, offered a pattern for a pleat board to help with getting the plates in the masks.
I had recently failed miserably doing some deconstructed screen printing but the fabric still had potential – don’t all fabrics?
So I experimented with the pleat board and created a collection of mask like blocks and pieced them together
I converted a drawing of a coronavirus into a thermofax screen and experimented with discharge paste (Decolorant) and fabric paint.
I only quilted the coronavirus shapes as I wanted the texture of the overall quilt to still reflect the masks.
