The Veteran’s Administration pays survivor benefits to survivors for veterans who have served during wartime. The list of eligible wars starts with the Mexican Border Period (1916-17), World War I, World War II, Korean Conflict, Vietnam era (two different payout systems, depending on whether service was in Vietnam or not), and “Gulf War.” This is defined by “August 2, 1990 through a future date to be set by law or presidential proclamation.”

That means we are currently embroiled in a nearly 30- years war.

Then I happened up a website, www.nationalgeographic.com/healing-soldiers/ and I got really interested.

With the aid of art therapists, soldiers are encouraged to make a mask for themselves that expresses their feelings about their war injuries. The website includes stories told by the soldiers about their masks and photos of some of them.

My quilt is entitled “Masks From the 30 Years War.”
