Momentum

The prompt of “Change in Colours” seemed a simple one but given I am working in a series it took a bit of thought. The easiest solution was just to completely change colours and do something about change of seasons but the more I thought about it I kept thinking about changing up the series the the gathering momentum of where its going to end up.

I love the change in seasons and no that coming out of winter people generally have a more positive approach to life as the skies clear and the days become sunnier! You want to get out and do things! In New Zealand we are heading into winter and the momentum change for me is to create works for upcoming exhibitions. I can find more time in the cooler months and the momentum and pressure grow as I approach deadlines! Then coming out of winter for me is better weather to create my hand treated fabrics.

I have certainly changed colours from previous rounds and have gone to a brighter palate bringing in the oranges and the yellows to show a change in mood and excitement over what is to come. You can see the change when compared with the previous reveal of “Breaking Habits” shown below.

Breaking Habits

So I almost see this round as a resting point before I start to build and change over the coming months with the other rounds. I know I am heading in the right direction and my series is coming together. You get to see one at a time but I’m hoping next reveal will also have an added photo of the first six pieces so you can share the change and the process.

This piece is long and skinny this time and is the sixth in round 4. I have started at 25 inches wide and gone down to 9 inches wide and from round 7 will start to work my way back up from 9 to 25 inches wide. All pieces are 40 inches high.

Hand treated and dyed fabrics. Machine pieced and quilted. Fused applique. 9in W x 40in H

  1. The melding and merging of colour in these pieces is so attractive and skillful. I keep looking and have to drag my eyes away from the straight lines to more closely inspect the subtle shapes in the background.

  2. I like the movement provided by the ‘L’ shapes, but also the pattern, texture and circle surprises in the background. So much to see in a narrow space! Well done, Catherine. ❤️

  3. Stunning colour play and a beautiful hanging that will draw many to come closer and see the details, Catherine. Dynamic…
