I love this time of the year, when nature wakes up and green leaves start to appear on the bushes and trees. After a long Canadian winter everyone is glad to see fresh colours, flowers and birds again. I wanted to convey this feeling using the picture of a bird’s nest filled with eggs. The symbol of emerging life, of a new circle of life, of hope, has universal meaning across cultures. I got the idea not only by noticing the birds in our garden, but also because our new neighbours were expecting their first child. The baby arrived 3 weeks ago, so the timing was perfect in a way.

I used a Thermofax screen to print the nests. The eggs are appliqued in one nest. In the other I masked the egg shapes and coloured around them. The fabric with the photo print of a bare tree was in my stash for a long time, but it turned out to be perfect for this. I added some green ink splotches to get the impression of emerging light green foliage on the stark black and white tree fabric.

I’m happy with my result, it makes me hopeful to look at it!
