While a community is made up of individuals, a community is usually also a physical space, inhabited by those individuals. This space can shape the character of a community in positive and negative ways and contributes greatly to the sense of safety, comfort, health and well-being of the community members. I notice, during this period of individual isolation how important people in my communities have found the outdoor spaces in their environments to be to their own well-being. People are sharing their gardens and flowers on social media, and reporting on daily walks that provide time for meditation and contemplation and peaceful moments.
I had contemplated several ideas for my turn at proposing the theme for our next work, but recent days at this point in our isolation have made me ever more aware of my own need for the peace and beauty of the outdoors and I sense I’m not alone in that. So here is my challenge: consider how the parks, gardens, trails, and areas set aside for nature in your community affect your sense of yourself within the community.
How important is preserved or created green space in an urban environment?
Does creating a garden surrounding your home give you satisfaction and enhance daily life?
Where are the green places that give you peace?
I’m excited about this prompt. I am already well on my way, though I have a lot of work yet to do.
Thank you, Terry, for something positive to focus on.
I am fortunate to live in the country. As I can see trees, my garden, and wildlife from every window I know how lucky I am…
Being connected to our world is so important…feeling isolated is very stressful for social beings….
