Nexus is a connection or link between things, persons or events.  (Merriam- Webster) When this theme was announced, I was struggling through a new-to-me technique, improvisational curved piecing.  It was challenging to sew two curved pieces of fabric together and have them lie flat.  When I stitched two pieced units together, the seams rarely landed where I planned them to, so results were often surprising and kind of wonky.  Of course I persisted, and ended up with a yin yang composition once all the “blocks” came together. 

I appreciate Sheila Frampton-Cooper who patiently coached me in the technique and applauded my efforts.  I was delighted when she mailed me a copy of a new book on Creativity by Rick Rubin.  I connected with many of his theories, and I feel I have a new long-distance friendship with Sheila. 

I recently connected in person with some artist friends at a SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) conference in Toronto.  Those who were willing to give and receive hugs wore a green dot on our nametags.  This design reminded me of a hug, or a bond – a nexus. 

This work is not typical of me.  I rarely use solid fabrics, and I generally applique the pieces of my designs.  The piecing was challenging.  The quilting was difficult.  The work took long hours. In the end, I love the piece and am glad I stubbornly saw it through.  Sheila was pleased when I threw in some printed fabrics and some overdyed shirts along with all the solids and ice-dyed fabrics.  I’m amazed that I finished before our deadline!

ネクサスは、物、人、出来事の間の接続またはリンクです。 (メリアム・ウェブスター) このテーマが発表されたとき、私は即興のカーブピーシングという初めてのテクニックに苦労していました。 2 枚の湾曲した生地を縫い合わせて平らにするのは困難でした。 2 つのユニットを縫い合わせたとき、縫い目が予定通りに着くことはほとんどなく、結果はしばしば驚くべきものになり、不安定なものになりました。 もちろん私は粘り強く取り組み、すべての「ブロック」が集まった時点で陰陽の構図が完成しました。 忍耐強くテクニックを指導し、私の努力を称賛してくれたシーラ・フランプトン・クーパーに感謝しています。 彼女がリック・ルービンの創造性に関する新しい本のコピーを私に送ってくれたとき、私はとてもうれしく思いました。 私は彼の理論の多くに共感し、シーラと新たな遠距離恋愛ができたように感じています。 私は最近、トロントで開催された SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) カンファレンスでアーティストの友人たちと直接つながりました。 喜んでハグをしたり受けたりする人は、私たちの名札に緑色の点を付けていました。 このデザインは私にハグや絆、つまりつながりを思い出させました。 この作品は私らしいものではありません。 無地の生地を使用することはほとんどなく、デザインの一部をアップリケすることが多いです。 縫い合わせは大変でした。 キルティングが難しかったです。 作業には長い時間がかかりました。 結局のところ、私はこの作品が大好きなので、頑固に最後まで見届けてよかったと思います。 無地やアイスダイの生地に加えて、プリント生地やオーバーダイのシャツを数枚投入すると、シーラは喜んでくれました。 締め切り前に終わったことに驚いています！
