At first, I intended to print and paint my fabrics for this challenge. I was planning to make marks on fabric, but then I remembered that I had a selection of fabrics set aside for exactly such a piece already. The bundle contained two printed Marcia Derse fabrics (the dots and brushstroke fabrics), as well as a multi-colored fabric that had interesting marks and shapes. I decided to use those fabrics instead.
I wanted to showcase some of my favorite patterns – stripes, squares, triangles, and dots. My idea was to layer the patterns, so I floated areas of pieced patterns on top of the patterned fabrics. The checkerboard and half-square triangle sections were improvisationally pieced together, then fused onto the top.
The third layer of patterns is introduced by the machine quilting. Here, I utilized some of the patterns that are go-to patterns for me, for example, bubbles, wobbly stripes, leafy shapes, and so on.
