Karol Kusmaul
My husband and I went on a spur of the moment week long getaway to Illinois in October of 2021. We both are originally from there and still have family who live there. It always feels great to revisit our hometowns and remember bits of our past. My sister was concerned when I gave her an extended hug, but with the way the past couple of years have been, I think we need more lingering hugs.
Part of the trip involved a drive through some small towns about 60 miles south of Chicago, where my husband grew up. I snap a lot of photos from our moving car – old barns, interesting houses, those huge wind turbines, etc. We stopped in a place called Oglesby because they were having a street fall celebration and craft sale. It was cold (by Floridian standards) and windy. I was smiling the entire day, just experiencing the cold temps. The craft show was not very big, and I grabbed a few candid shots of vendors, and we were on our way.
Jim took me to Buffalo Rock State Park in Ottawa, Illinois, where I was totally surprised to see two actual buffalo! It was a pretty magical day.
While passing through Oglesby, I managed to grab a good shot of a wonderful farm house with a large brick chimney. From the moving car. Little did I know then that we would be given the prompt of Building structures for our Cloth in Common project during December and January.
I never lived on a farm, but I have fond memories of visits to Uncle Frank and Aunt Jessie’s farm. We got to ride on the tractor, and help hand churn ice cream there. I was lucky to visit Stan and Myrna’s farm in Stanford a few times. Great cooking, big barns with big equipment and a crazy dog that would retrieve thrown fireworks, or rocks, or just about anything.
I had a few great choices for a reference, but I decided to go with this beautiful farm house that I spotted on a wonderful Polka Dot Sky kind of a day in Oglesby, Illinois.
I feel like I’ve built a house! Some progress images and detail shots:

Love the different textures. Beautiful story too
It reminds me of similar stately houses in our region. I love how you get those shading effects with the tulle. A beautiful piece!
Karol, you are a good architect. You could build whole cities super nice work!
I am originally from Ohio and have seen and visited similar stately old houses. They were built by men, often immigrants, who valued craftsmanship. I love your whimsical quilt.
As a MN native, I have seen many of these old farmhouses. Some of them are quite special. It is so good when they are loved and lived in still. Your choice of fabrics really emphasizes the various nooks and crannies. Thanks for the great rendition and the good story .
Beautiful, Karol. And a wonderful story to boot!
There is nothing like a treasure discovered in the States, nd especially those that remind you of home… I love Illinois (as a Michigan Girl ,I spent lots of summers there), and the beautiful landscape and hundreds of old homes. You have created a beautiful story to remember!
Beautiful! It’s like the dream house of an American drama that I saw when I was a kid.
