The prompt was Flexible Structure.  I decided I wanted to work with some of my hand dyed fabrics, so I pulled out several groupings.  Here are some pieces I considered stitching together as a background on which to ‘build’ a flexible structure. 

I searched through several other ice-dyed and screen-printed fabrics, until I found these ones. Only two fabrics which blended together very well.  And they already looked like a flexible building!!  What luck!

I began to quilt them into a three layer work, using various colored embroidery threads.  Once I had finished stitching, I felt like the piece needed more.  I considered adding foils, but was unsuccessful in my trials with glue and foils.  This brought me to the idea to add some small circles of contrasting fabrics. 

Once completed, a figure magically appeared at the top.  This reminded me of climbing and reaching a pinnacle.  It seemed a metaphor for the MFA program I am currently pursuing, so I called this piece “Potential”.
