Water is our source of life, both for nature and for humans. From the free-flowing rivers, which fish and birds need to survive, to the clean water that comes out of your tap. There is a European Commission that protects our lakes, rivers and marshes. Through these regulations, we must remain alert to dangers.

According to the latest data, 60% of Europe’s waters are not healthy. People have been draining wetlands for centuries for agriculture, industry and population. The quality of rivers has deteriorated due to dredging and pollution. The habitat of birds and fish is threatened.

Protect our Waters

It is not only nature that is experiencing negative consequences, we are also increasingly faced with floods and droughts. In the long term, our water quality deteriorated and eventually our drinking water deteriorated.

All in all, this is a worrying development.

By making this quilt I want to contribute to raising awareness. Let us protect our waters and take care of them.

  1. Elfriede, your beautiful colour/stitch background reminds us that we have precious waters, and that care and protection are vital. I love your stitching and the reminder in the last photo …we find so many fish lost to our carelessness.

  2. I feel like I could swim in this and feel the potential loss of this beautiful place. The colors are brilliant.

Tell us what you think.
