In Christchurch, New Zealand, where I come from, we experienced a series of major earthquakes during 2010 and 2011. These caused 185 deaths and massive destruction to our city. Parts of the city were built on a sandy land that liquified (Liquefaction) and a muddy sludge that saw some houses and businesses sink into the land or the liquefaction come up through the foundation of the houses and destroy what was inside.
Our government classified all land in the city and surrounds into can be built on and cannot be rebuilt on. The result of this is that we have areas called Red Zones, so the Government purchased these properties from the owners and have demolished the properties. In other areas of the city there is rebuilding still happening after 15 years!
What you see is nature coming back to these areas, popping out of cracks in the road, growing over broken fences, old ruins and taking control again! It shows as how fragile and insignificant the human population is in the wider scheme of things. These areas are now Parks for all to enjoy with the fruit trees planted with the houses are still growing and anyone can go and harvest them. Back to nature at its best.

Catherine, The destructive power and regenerative ability of nature are truly astonishing. I believe that your beautiful quilt artwork will provide warm comfort to those who were hurt by the earthquake.
Catherine, what a remarkable story. Here, on the other side of the world, you have no idea what’s happening to you. It’s wonderful that we can erase the beautiful, yet impressive, things in this way. Thank you so much for that.
That must have been terrifying to experience firsthand, and I’m sorry for everyone who was lost and for their families and friends. Your quilt is beautiful and a fitting tribute to the resilience of nature despite its own destructive forces. I wish I was able to your piece in person!
