I wanted to create a quilt about an idea – the “Restoration of Common Sense” regarding book banning.

I recently visited Amsterdam and got tickets to tour the Anne Frank House, where she and her family and another family lived in hiding for about 2 years during the German occupation of Holland during WWII. I remember reading her diary at age about 12 or 13 and being greatly influenced by it, to the point of starting, and keeping a diary for many years.

While there I bought the recently released complete edition of her diary – quite different that the edited one I read when younger. Some of the new parts have caused the new book to be met with censure.  It joins the list of books that are most frequently banned from libraries and schools in some areas. (In Florida, apparently the most!)

These titles are included in my piece around the edges, along with daggers and flames. (My symbolism is a bit heavy handed I fear!) In the center is a girl (myself?) curled up in a comfy armchair, engrossed in reading Anne Frank’s diary.

I myself have reservations about books that may actually promote sex changes in young people. And I admit I have not had the time to read all the books that are at the top of the list of those being banned.  But I do have a strong aversion to banning books. I am for the most free exchange of ideas possible. If there are problems with a book – write another one to counter and explain!

私は、書籍の発禁に関する「常識の回復」というアイデアについてのキルトを作りたかったのです。

私は最近アムステルダムを訪れ、アンネ・フランクの家を見学するチケットを手に入れました。そこでは、第二次世界大戦中のドイツ占領下のオランダで、彼女とその家族、そして別の家族が約 2 年間隠れて暮らしていました。 私は12、3歳くらいの時に彼女の日記を読んで、多大な影響を受けて、日記を書き始めて何年も書き続けたのを覚えています。

そこで私は最近発売された彼女の日記の完全版を購入しましたが、若い頃に読んだ編集されたものとはまったく異なります。 新しい部分のいくつかは、新しい本が非難にさらされる原因となっています。 この本は、一部の地域の図書館や学校で最も頻繁に禁止されている本のリストに加わりました。 （どうやらフロリダが一番多いようです！）

これらのタイトルは、短剣や炎とともに私の作品の周囲に含まれています。 （私の象徴性は少し高圧的なのではないかと心配しています！） 中央には、快適な肘掛け椅子に丸まって、アンネの日記を読むのに夢中になっている女の子（私自身？）がいます。

私自身、若者の性転換を実際に促進する可能性のある本には抵抗があります。 そして、発禁リストの上位にある本をすべて読む時間がなかったことを認めます。 しかし、私は本の発禁には強い嫌悪感を持っています。 私は可能な限り自由な意見交換を支持します。 ある本に問題がある場合は、別の本を書いて反論し、説明してください。
