The prompt of Anatomy should make you think of a living organism but my passion (some would say obsession) continues to explore the work of Antoni Gaudi.

I was drawn to the skeleton framework that is the basic structure of any building. What better building to explore than Sagrada Familia, the unfinished masterpiece of Gaudi.

Sometimes these frameworks are covered up and hidden from view but the supporting structure of Sagrada Familia remains for all to see.

Using this (purchased) image as my foundation I manipulated the image with a variety of filters in a program called Vector Q to get multiple views.

Using over 20 shades and colours of my hand dyed & painted fabrics I fused them all with Mistyfuse – my fusible of choice. Tracing out each shapes and transferring them to the fabric using this great technique took a long time and some creative decisions were made along the way eliminating or combining some shapes.

Fabrics

Once completed I painted some non woven Pellon 830 (also fused) to cut with my Silhouette Cameo digital cutter. The plotter image was transferred to the cutter and sections were cut.

These were then overlaid onto the background and fused into position. I printed the designs onto tracing paper to assist in placement.

Quilting was done on my Bernina Q20 and I decided to follow the directions of the supporting columns to exaggerate the linear quality of the interior.

  1. I am also a big fan of La Sagrada de Familia and LOVE this quilt. It’s the best cathedral I’ve ever seen – the most spiritual cathedral in my mind. You’ve captured the feeling of the cathedral so well!

  2. Lisa, what a beautiful way to start the day – looking deeply into the amazingly delicate work you have created. A brilliant salute to Gaudi… The colour is beautiful, with intense depths to delicate shading.

  3. Your art work never ceases to amaze! Just fantastic and I love that you share your process which could not be replicated , at least not by most of us. Love the historical aspect as well

  4. Wonderful color, contrast and movement. I love how you edited the image into your own organic expression. La Sagrada Familia is a wonderful example of a skeleton.

Tell us what you think.
