When the prompt of Doors, portals and openings was presented there were so many options to look at from my travels to Canada and the USA back in 2019. This is the final prompt for this Cloth in Common Round and I have based all but the first work on these travels. As a result I have really enjoyed going through my 3000+ photos and reliving this amazing holiday.
So lets look at the options (there were many more) that I could do:
First was this wonderful door in Montreal on the side of Notre Dame Basilica. Walking along the street this door immediately took me back to New Zealand where the file, The Hobbit, was filmed and in the hillside they had little doors like this to their homes! I love Notre Dame Basilica as my Mum had visited their back in 1968 from New Zealand as well. What was the door used for? I was too busy going into this amazing building to find out but I wish I had.
The doors to St Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC are very ornate surrounded by stunning architecture of a time gone by just like the Basilica in Toronto. I have been into the Cathedral and it is stunning and also surrounded by a lot of history. However I’m not sure I want to be so specific with my work – what story would I tell?
As we got towards the end of our journey I had differing options:
So many different types – gambling machines are an opening to addiction and I struggled seeing them everywhere in Las Vegas – at the car rental, in the airport where you collect your luggage and maybe one last go when you are flying out in the departure lounge. At the Hoover Dam you have the doors into the Dam itself no doubt to help take care of the water flow.
Probably all by computer these days but a magnificent site anyway! Lastly there was the visit to the Grand Canyon! Breathtaking to view and like parts of my own country, albeit on a smaller scale, you feel so insignificant when standing amongst nature.
What will I interpret? Its well underway but you will have to wait till the reveal at the end of May. See you then!
Montreal/Las Vegas/NYC: amazing travel destinations, along with the Hoover and Grand Canyon – so much inspiration. Watching to see the one piece that will share the culmination of your travels…. an exciting wait to the finish line for each of us.
Truly an infinite number of options with this theme. Can’t wait to see what results.
