During the time I was starting this quilt, I was looking through my UFOs, WIPs, PFCs (any unfinished works including those started during a class.)  At some point in the mid 2010’s I was in the habit of taking classes, buying lots of supplies, loving the processes, but not finishing or using fabrics made in these classes.  So it all got put away for ‘someday’.  Often, I would want to try the techniques again, but by the time I got inspired to do so, I had forgotten most of what I had learned. 

Instead of beginning something new for this Habit Change prompt, I decided to start with quilt top that I had started in a Pat Pauly class in March of 2015.  Lime and other greens, blues, and browns.  You can see it in progress on the back wall.  The class was all about cutting and improvisationally piecing various prints into small ‘chunks’ which could then be moved around to compose a cohesive composition.  At the end of the class, I went home with several chunks  to work with.

This is the quilt top that resulted.  I was happy to get all the chunks into one flat piece, but I was underwhelmed with the composition, so it went into the ‘someday’ pile. For our Habit Change theme, I was determined to make good use of this old beginning and improve it to my satisfaction.  

I knew it needed some spark, so I pulled out some cherry red fabric.  There were bits of red in one of the prints, and the new red set off the lime green nicely. Then I went to a thrift store in south Florida and came home with a beautiful dark blue blouse, which was also destined to add verve to the mix.  I was courageous in cutting into the top, inserting the new colors, and continuing to move chunks around.  I believe these changes improved the work tremendously!  Both additions helped to tame a BUSY collection of prints, added depth, and created some resting places in the design.

The red took center stage, and I was leaning toward it representing a plant, but on second look, to me, it was more like a large bird, hence the title Swoop!

I’m so happy to have changed my habit of hanging on to pieces that I’m dissatisfied with, and instead, reworking them into something much greater.  Also, the work I did in 2015 saved me lots of time nine years later in 2024.  Win/Win.  The Swoop! quilt was finished an entire month early.  I hope to continue this habit of renewal and whittle down the ‘someday’ pile significantly.

この習慣を変えるというプロンプトに対して何か新しいことを始める代わりに、2015 年 3 月にパット ポーリーのクラスで始めたキルト トップから始めることにしました。ライム、その他のグリーン、ブルー、ブラウンです。後ろの壁で進行中の様子が見られます。このクラスでは、さまざまな版画を小さな「塊」に切り取り、即興でつなぎ合わせ、それを移動させて一貫した構成を構成することがすべてでした。クラスの終わりに、私はいくつかの塊を持って家に帰りました。

そうして出来上がったのがキルトトップです。すべての塊を 1 つの平面的な作品に収めることができて満足しましたが、構成に圧倒されたため、「いつか」の山に入れられました。

私たちの「習慣を変える」というテーマでは、この古い始まりをうまく活用し、満足のいくまで改善しようと決意しました。

火花が必要だとわかったので、チェリーレッドの布地を取り出しました。プリントの 1 つに赤の部分があり、新しい赤がライム グリーンをうまく引き立てていました。それから私は南フロリダのリサイクルショップに行き、美しいダークブルーのブラウスを持って帰ってきました。これもまた、ミックスに活気を加える運命にありました。私は勇気を持って上部に切り込み、新しい色を挿入し、チャンクを移動し続けました。これらの変更により、作業が大幅に改善されたと思います。どちらの追加も、忙しいプリントのコレクションを飼いならし、深みを加え、デザインに休憩所を作るのに役立ちました。

赤が主役で、私は植物を表していると思っていましたが、よく見ると大きな鳥のように見えたので、タイトルを「Swoop!」にしました。

不満のある部分にしがみつく癖を変え、それをより素晴らしいものに作り直すことができて、とてもうれしいです。また、2015 年に行った作業により、9 年後の 2024 年に多くの時間を節約できました。Win/Win。急降下！キルトは丸々一ヶ月早く完成しました。この更新の習慣を続けて、「いつか」の山を大幅に減らしたいと思っています。
