To me, at first, ‘Dare to dream’ can be taken to mean
“Have the courage to pursue your dreams.”
But the phrase also whispers something else to me:
“Do not fear change.” And with that, Zhuangzi’s ancient parable,
The Butterfly Dream, came to mind.

One day, Zhuangzi dreams that he has become a butterfly –
fluttering freely through the sky, wandering with effortless joy,
unaware that he is Zhuangzi at all.
Then, waking suddenly,
he finds himself once again simply Zhuangzi.
He then asks: Was I Zhuangzi dreaming I was a butterfly?
Or am I now a butterfly dreaming that I am Zhuangzi?

This parable is often read as a meditation
on the blurring of reality and dream,
the dissolving boundary between self and other, or the transience of life.

But I wish to see it differently.
Perhaps one might dream of becoming a butterfly by chance
– yet I wonder whether such a dream arises
because there is a yearning to soar freely, a longing for transformation.
In the dream, he revels in being a butterfly:
seeking blossoms, riding the wind,
drinking in the feeling of pure freedom.
And even if the dream ends,
even if he wakes to the reality of being Zhuangzi
and feels torn between two selves,
a person who dreams is, in itself, something beautiful.

Existence, to me, is not fixed
but endlessly shifting and unfolding through dreams.
So let us dream boldly – and dream again and again.
I say to myself:
Do not fear change, and do not fear being inspired by your dreams.

  1. You have such beautiful butterflies where you live! Going on a photo butterfly safari would be fun to see how many you could capture with your lens. Thank you for sharing Zhuangzi’s parable. It leaves a lot for thought!

    1. Thank you so much, Christie! I’m grateful you enjoyed both the photos of the butterfly and Zhuangzi’s parable. I love your expression, ‘a photo butterfly safari’. Capturing butterflies through the lens was a small and fun adventure.
