The Gateway 2-12
Martha Ressler
How often does a wall – and not just any wall – but the Great Wall of China transform from a barrier into a gateway to bring people together instead of keeping them apart?
I visited China and climbed the Great Wall in 2019. There were families with their children, vendors of crafts and food, and tourists from around the world.
I included images of my Chinese visa and my Great Wall certificate in the trees, and atlas maps of China in the mountains.
My photo of the young mother and her child is my favorite picture from China – taken on the Great Wall.

A great idea, well executed! I love your use of the paper map in the piece. Now I want to travel!
Thank you Regina. Yes! It was the trip of a lifetime.
I love the theory of a wall bringing people together. Rare, indeed!
Thank you Karol. I stuck with the first thing I thought of!
Martha, your art shares the joy of your travel to China, and provides a treasure map of the importance in your life. Your memory of the mother with her child reminds us how important it is to look, see and hold dear the world around us.
Thank you Bethany. That’s what I was thinking. Sometime I just feel overwhelmed with gratitude to be alive in the world at the same time as this person.
