The Unfinished American Revolution

My idea was to use a small sampling of the political buttons I’d collected over many years of political activity to illustrate how the promise of the American revolution has fallen short and how realizing its promise has taken – is taking – many generations of struggle.

I left the bottom tattered – incomplete.  The top section of the red white and blue stripes (themselves fashioned out of vintage feed bags) are fiber filled.  By the bottom of the piece, they are flat and deflated. The words at the top say “We hold these truths . . .  that all people are created equal.” An abbreviation/rewording of the ringing promise  in the Declaration of Independence. I wanted to create something for the 250 year anniversary of the American revolution next year, and this is my attempt.

私のアイデアは、長年の政治活動で集めた政治ボタンの小さなサンプルを使って、アメリカ独立戦争の約束がいかに実現しなかったか、そしてその約束を実現するのにいかに多くの世代の闘争が必要だったか、そして今も必要であるかを示すことでした。

底部はぼろぼろのまま、不完全なままにしました。赤、白、青のストライプの上部 (それ自体がヴィンテージの飼料袋から作られています) には繊維が詰まっています。作品の底部では平らで空気が抜けています。上部の言葉は「我々はこれらの真実を信じている…すべての人々は平等に創られている」です。これは独立宣言の響き渡る約束の短縮形/言い換えです。来年のアメリカ独立戦争 250 周年に何かを作りたかったのですが、これがそれです。
