I have been pondering a recent article in the New York Times Magazine (Dec. 2, 2018) entitled The Insect Apocalypse is Here. For various reasons there have been very few scientific studies done over the years on the total biomass of insects. Their general decline (it appears to be worldwide, including in remote rain forests, and across all species) has been instead manifested visually.  By people like you and me who have noticed the “windshield phenomenon.” That is, our windshields are now relatively clear of dead bugs.  Unlike past years when you could hardly see to drive for the smeary mess.

This reminded me of a collage I did a few years ago called “A Life, Pixelated.” When my mom died in 2008 I became the default owner of a box of miscellaneous photos and ephemera. These were pictures that she didn’t include in her carefully arranged albums, plus address books, art show programs and other papers.

I pondered what to do with them for 3 years, until I finally decided to cut them up. I chose a fresh-faced photo of my mom when she graduated from college. And re-created it using ½ inch squares of these papers. Thus the bloom of youth devolved into pieces of reality as she matured and lived her life.

None of this is to say that I have the slightest idea what I am going to make for this challenge –Time!

私はこの挑戦のために何をしようとしているのか少ししか考えていないと言います。
