“Wenn ich wüsste, dass morgen die Welt unterginge, würde ich heute noch ein Apfelbäumchen pflanzen”
(“If I would have know the world would end tomorrow, I would plant an apple tree today”)
Martin Luther (1483- 1546)Theologist, Philosopher and Reformat.
This quote is the inspiration for this quilt. Our world is in a very bad state. We live in a world of great floods. This summer, that happened here in the Netherlands and Germany.
Due to the large amount of rainwater, the rivers went beyond their banks. The water has nowhere to go.
People are taking up more and more space for buildings and pavement. The water can’t go away. Rapidly rising water is the consequence. The disaster is complete, when the water in mudslide takes houses and even entire villages with it. Even in an ancient church, the water steamed in.
Something needs to be done quickly. Expert people and administrators need to deal with these issues. It’s not too late, you can always pull the emergency brake, like Martin Luther! We can also contribute ourselves. More planting and less pavement in the garden.
I pressed tree trunks on fabric. In the evening it was not yet dry and I left it outside on the clothesline. Due to a lot of rain at night, the paint has run out. I was surprised with the result. Now it looks like the trees are crying!

I am fascinated by the background and soft, pale colouration in your quilt. Looking closely, discoveries are there in your detail and beautifully executed stitches, Elfriede. Truly beautiful!
Thank you very much for the compliment. Elfriede
Water is an issue everywhere, isn’t it. In my area it’s lack of water. In some areas it’s the cleanliness of water, the availability of drinking water. I like how the rain affect the actual look of your artwork, too.
Amazing
