Martha Ressler, Anatomy, 3-3

For “Anatomy” I thought of trees and in particular tree roots, as they reveal themselves on steep banks.

Van Gogh’s last painting was of tree roots, and I have always loved that painting. There is a perfect collection of such roots a few miles from my home, and I took some photos for inspiration.

I wanted to keep the construction of this piece loose, with dangling pieces, and holes in the quilt. I decided on two trees, with intertwined roots, using complementary colors of purple and yellow, with a few spots of green moss.

Martha Ressler, Tree Roots, detail

The background is parachute silk, dated 1950, with many of its seams and irregularities exposed. (I wondered what adventures this particular parachute has seen!)

Besides strips of cloth and felt, there is a corded piece of fabric, and strings from the parachute, and some accents of the “tree” entry from an old dictionary. It is machine and hand quilted.

By the way, the exact spot where Van Gogh painted his tree roots has been discovered. Since afternoon light flooded the scene, this discovery has even lent credence to an alternate theory to the one that he took his own life. That is, that he had spent an ordinary day painting into the afternoon, and then was shot accidentally by some local boys later in the day.

The trees today on the Rue Daubigny, Auvers-sur-Oise where Vincent van Gogh likely painted his last canvas.

I rather hope that is the case.

  1. Martha, what a different version of a tree as opposed to my work. It is wonderful to see how differently you can develop a theme.

  2. The three dimensional aspect of your quilt is fascinating. I also have many photos of tree roots but have never worked out how to represent them. You have certainly achieved it.

  3. I love your piece, Martha – the story and the actual contemporary art play in the roots and the stitches hat resonate in the study we will do while exploring your art! Beautifully unique in the use of various materials and hidden bits that appear. Really great.
