I am so impressed with the various approaches of each artist in Cloth in Common. Seems we all have major concerns about water issues. During the time I was working on my quilt, Hurricane Michael was threatening and then came crashing into the panhandle area of Florida, causing death and destruction. I’m also distressed about the amounts of plastic and other waste in our oceans.
I chose to develop a design showing active waves, and using all scrap pieces of my fabrics. This idea reminded me of times when I worked with small children and we would create collages using unusual shapes of paper when our scrap boxes were overflowing. I pulled out a tub of scrap fabrics and began by sorting warm/cool/neutral colors. Step two was to further sort each group by light/medium/dark values.
I then basted together some batting, a large piece of felt, and a beige top fabric to serve as a base for the scrap shapes. This hung in my kitchen for the duration of the applique process.
A scrappy, dark wavy line started it all. Followed by a second dark wavy line with a curl. You can see that I was appliqueing the scraps to the base using a running stitch of embroidery floss. Lines of stitching were spaced about a half inch apart.
On to a medium value adjoining section.
I considered leaving the beige base fabric showing, but, I had all those light color blues, greens and violets, so I began piecing them as well. I left the edges of each section unstitched so that I could overlap neighboring areas before stitching them down.
Once everything was stitched, I added a backing fabric, and began quilting – again with a running stitch, using hand quilting thread. All that stitching gave the quilt a lovely texture.
Finally, the quilt was blocked and faced. Miraculously, I still had several weeks until the deadline to finish. So, I started thinking . . . about how else I could have interpreted the water theme. My daughter works with water movement and treatment. As a result, I am more aware of pump stations and various equipment and controls for handling water.
I have collected some photos of the interesting pipes, wheels, chains, locks, etc. I thought I would sometime do a series on these sculptural forms. Looks like I missed a good chance to get it started!
