For the Building prompt I chose to create my favorite building in Hong Kong, The Center. One of the reasons I like the building so much is that it’s lit up—all year long–not just for Christmas and New Year as are many of the skyscrapers along Victoria Harbour. I could have just as well created this piece for the current prompt, Light.
Several of the other Cloth in Common artists also created artwork for the Building prompt that could have fit the Light prompt, too. Did you see these quilts in our Building gallery?
After doodling on the computer and coming up with a nice idea for light, I rejected it and decided to return to my building. It does, after all, change colors with its fabulous lighting. Sorry for the quality, I took the video from my phone in 2014–probably from the Star Ferry. But you’ll get the idea.
I also thought my building quilt needed to be taller than 40” (our required height). So I decided to make this new one in a different scale as well as color. If you recall, I came up with a second sketch, perhaps more beautiful, in a green colorway when doodling on the computer for the original Building project. You can see both on my Instagram feed. I also wrote about changes to the roof.
As of this post, I’ve finished the top and am getting ready to start quilting. Come back at the end of the March to see the final piece.
Deb, you always amaze and delight with your planning and execution, keeping us wondering. Thanks for the peek here, and I am excited to see how ‘LIGHT’ as you share in full size comes to life under your needle. Beautiful detail…
