I really loved the prompt for this round. It was “Building.”  As I mentioned in my last post, I do have a favorite building—The Center in Hong Kong. I call it my building.  When I start on a project, often I will doodle/sketch in Photoshop. It helps me to figure out what I can create in a 40” high quilt.  Sometimes I will stick to the design, other times it’s just a jumping off point.

Sketch in Photoshop

With this quilt, I had lots of color options because my building changes colors at night. I can change the colors of my sketch in the computer, so I played with several options. I really don’t know why I settled on rust, pink, and purple, but I was able to find the colors I wanted in Art Gallery Solids. It is my new favorite fabric. It’s tightly woven and really doesn’t fray much, which is an advantage when you’re piecing small strips of fabric. My go-to shop for Art Gallery Solids is a small women-owned business called PearTreeMarket.com They have all the colors, and you can buy as little as ¼ yard or a fat quarter. Plus they charge the same price per yard for the small cuts as they do if you buy multiple yards. And they ship it out fast. I ordered the AGS color card, so now I don’t have to guess at the colors.

Once I started making parts for this quilt it told me it wanted to be larger than 40” tall. Unfortunately, the 40” height size is one of the few “rules” we have for Cloth in Common.  So this project is essentially a study for a larger version.  Remember I said my building changes colors? I played with the sketch some more and think my next version might be in greens. Visit my Instagram page to see one possibility.

After finishing the piecing, the quilt shouted it wanted to be quilted with metallic thread. I listened. I present to you Deb’s Building.
