A fascination for bridges has been with me for a long time. Almost any big city in Europe, sitting along the banks of a river affords a view over a series of bridges. What a glorious stage of millennials of engineering. The symmetry, the rhythm and interplay of light and shadow across arches lets the architecture shine in a mirror of water.

No matter the style of bridge, – bold structures from stone, wood or metal, elegant swings, artistic, futuristic, minimalist or almost skeletal, the engineering and of building bridges is so much more than just function.

The enduring weight, yet elegance of Roman bridges—structures that defied time, weather and wars, remain as silent witnesses to civilization. Although, most bridges are built after the Roman Empire, they are always more than stone and mortar; they are metaphors for connection, resilience, and the human desire to keep moving beyond boundaries.

In our current days, defined by rapid change and digital overload, I find myself drawn to the quiet reassurance and permanence of built history. They are symbols of human resilience, collaboration, and the desire to reach one another across divides.

橋への魅力は、長い間私と共にあります。ヨーロッパのほとんどの大都市は、川のほとりに位置しており、一連の橋を見渡すことができます。何と素晴らしい、何千年もの工学の舞台でしょう。橋のアーチに渡る光と影の対比、その対称性やリズムが建築を水面に映る鏡のように輝かせます。

橋のスタイルがどのようなものであれ－石、木、金属で作られた大胆な構造、優雅なアーチ、芸術的、未来的、ミニマリスト、ほとんど骨組みのようなものまで、橋の建設における工学は単なる機能以上のものです。

ローマの橋の永続する重み、しかし優雅さ――時代、天候、戦争をものともせずに立つ構造物は、文明の静かな証人として存在し続けます。ローマ帝国以降に建設された橋のほとんどは、単なる石やモルタル以上のものです。それらは常に、つながり、回復力、そして限界を超えて前進し続けたいという人間の願望の比喩となっています。

急速な変化とデジタル情報の氾濫によって特徴付けられる現代において、私は、人間の回復力や協力、そして隔たりを越えて互いに届こうとする願いの象徴として、築かれた歴史の静かな安心感と永続性に惹かれています。
