A fascination for bridges has been with me for a long time. Almost any big city in Europe, sitting along the banks of a river affords a view over a series of bridges. What a glorious stage of millennials of engineering. The symmetry, the rhythm and interplay of light and shadow across arches lets the architecture shine in a mirror of water.

No matter the style of bridge, – bold structures from stone, wood or metal, elegant swings, artistic, futuristic, minimalist or almost skeletal, the engineering and of building bridges is so much more than just function.

The enduring weight, yet elegance of Roman bridges—structures that defied time, weather and wars, remain as silent witnesses to civilization. Although, most bridges are built after the Roman Empire, they are always more than stone and mortar; they are metaphors for connection, resilience, and the human desire to keep moving beyond boundaries.

The bridge was built in 1880’s over the main railway, partially destroyed in WWII, but restored 1952

In our current days, defined by rapid change and digital overload, I find myself drawn to the quiet reassurance and permanence of built history. They are symbols of human resilience, collaboration, and the desire to reach one another across divides.

  1. Absolutely gorgeous. I can instantly smell the centuries old stone baking in the heat as the day fades into evenibng, hear the birds chattering amongst each other as they fly past the spans, and the burbling water flowing past underneath. Wonderfully visceral!

Tell us what you think.
