HOT SEAT!
40” x 30”
Commerical Cotton Solids
Improvisonally Cut, Pieced, and Quilted
Sometimes a prompt can lead you all over the place before you finally settle in on an idea, but that did not happen this time. When Cloth in Common member Lisa Walton selected the prompt Touch, my response was quick and clear.
I had already been thinking about using the prompts from this group to create some new chair quilts. The 30’’ width by 40’’ height format is perfect for the vertical orientation of chairs.
I combined the idea of chair + touch and decided that creating a Hot Seat was the logical response.
While there are several different meanings for Hot Seat, I wanted my Hot Seat to be about being in a difficult situation. What would that chair look like?
For me, it would be ON FIRE.
So the next step was how to piece fire? I decided to use a flying geese unit. It worked.
There were some other minor construction issues that I had to deal with, but over all this piece came together easily.
Then there was the quilting. My original plan was to do something simple as I was under deadline and my regular quilting takes forever.
As I started stitching, I knew that I would rather be late than sloppy.
I had created my own Hot Seat situation. Which could be called the new normal around here.
My estimate is that the quilting too about 15 -18 hours from start to finish.
It was great prompt and I love the quilt.
