Media as a way of communicating has been around since the stone ages but for as long as I have been around the one constant has been writing implements such as pens and pencils. One of my first memories was of ink blotted fingers as I was always a messy child. The ‘biro’ was a forbidden implement in my primary school as I guess they were trying to hang onto the past.
Media has come a long way now when we can talk to people all over the world at the drop of a keystroke but I can still think of media in this now primitive form.
Think of declarations of peace in war time – they were signed with the flourish of a fountain pen. So I still believe that ‘The Pen is Mightier than the Sword’.
This quilt was created using a copyright free image of a pen and ink bottle.
It was manipulated in Photoshop to break down into different layers and then a line drawing
The pen and ink fabrics were a gradation of light to dark blue hand dyed fabrics
The background fabrics were screen printed using original designs of text and deconstructed piles of newspapers and pieced randomly.
Detail images of the quilting – cross hatch and matchstick and the raw edge applique was free motion quilted in an outline.

Egyptian papyrus was the beginning of the media. what kind of ink did they use?
Your ink is shining beautifully in a glass bottle.
Lovely work and really interesting to know how you developed it.
This is such an exquisite piece. The focus, the depth, the message! Thank you for sharing your process with us !
My favourite colour combination! A great statement with lots of visual interest and captivating design.
This is such a beautiful piece and I love the message!
Great work! I like how the blues create the dimension of the bottle and pen…and the color of the background adds to the 3-d effect. Background writing and print show a progression of print media. Nice job. And thank you for sharing how you approached and completed the the subject
Thanks for showing closeups of your process and the fabrics used. A wonderful piece.
This statement quilt means so much in these difficult days. I am keeping a journal of what is important to my recall of the many difficulties we are experiencing to leave for my grandchildren and theirs…
Your quilt reminds me to keep that as a sacred pledge. Beautifully executed, stunning colour and deisgn.
Wow. I love the focus on one thing. I couldn’t seem to do that!! Great visual contrast, design and detail.
