When writing my latest blogpost for Cloth in Common I came across the site of a museum in Antwerp I once visited, Museum Planing-Moretus. A printing office and house of more than 400 years old.

I realized that fake news, perversion of the truth, explaining the facts differently, etc, is timeless. In fact it started with the ability of mankind to talk and continued with the ability to publish.

In the beginning of the publishing process making multiple copies of a writing took a lot of effort. But nowadays with all the social media it is simpler to publish your own truth.

Designing my quilt I wanted to make a mix of old and modern times. So I searched their collection of 16th century woodblocks. I used the old typography to form the modern term ‘Fake news’ to to emphasize that fake news is timeless.

The ones I used were about 13cm square with a lot of details.

The title of the quilt is ‘Check’, as you always should check whether news is true or a lie. And of course there are some deliberate mistakes in the written background of the quilt.

  1. Really love this. Your images

As a lover and student of typography, this really struck a chord before I even read about the timely and timeless topic. I love the use of the two type styles to make your point.
It reminds me of the old riddle: “what’s black and white and red (read) all over? Answer: a newspaper.

  2. Wow. Great intrepretation. I’ll take your word for it that there are deliberate mistakes in the background. I myself am still trying to read it! All of that edge under applique of those letters . . . Love the contrasty colors. And the use of the old woodblocks to indicate the timelessless of Fake News is brilliant.
