When I owned a business, with clients and employees, I was constantly planning for future growth, gaining efficiencies and developing new aspects to the business.

Our annual goal was a BHAG (BIG, HAIRY, AUDACIOUS GOAL), and yes, we always wrote them in capitals, and it was supported by a mis-quote from Goethe:

Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it;
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.

BHAGs were the favourite goals.  It seemed ridiculous to do all that work to achieve a little or insignificant goal.   Whether the quote is Goethe’s, or a John Anster translation of Goethe’s writing, is rather immaterial.  The language has been amended to strike a chord with modern readers and create a “Call to Action” in our minds.  You can dream, imagine, aspire or wish for something as much as you like, but unless you take action to implement your goal, you will not achieve it.

These days, I sew and create art, mainly for my own satisfaction.  Retirement means that I do not have a staff to implement my goals.  I still have lots of ideas rolling around in my head, some of which I can implement myself with my well stocked workshop/studio space.  But some things are outside my skill set or my physical limits.  For that I need my husband and partner in life, my personal construction engineer.

This year, I dared to dream that I could have a portable rack that would both store and easily display my art quilts.  Over coffee one morning, I sketched out the idea, he gave me his terms and conditions about time, cost and level of difficulty, and an agreement was made.  Our BHAG was about to be implemented!

It took a day to travel to the correct stores for the materials, bring them home and build the whole thing.  It took me another day to sort out which quilts to hang, sew on sleeves for the ones that were missing such a necessary item, ensure labels were correct and set it up.  Note that I also made a simple cover to keep dust and light off the quilts, not shown in the pictures. See the photos to check out my BHAG!

I would like to thank my Implementation and Construction Manager for his timely and powerful commitment to our retirement business, and a special thanks to Joe Cunningham, @joethequilter, whose very similar rack I saw on IG and was the inspiration for this piece of quilt furniture.

  1. This is FANTASTIC! I hope the one will turn into half a dozen. The adaptability to add extra poles on additional hooks is so smart. I’m sure we all have rack envy now. Your quilts are absolutely stunning. XO
