A long hard winter like the one we’ve been through in my part of the world always brings to mind George Washington and his soldiers suffering through cold and privation at Valley Forge, PA in 1777-1778. The soldiers were inadequately provisioned and suffered disease as well as bone chilling cold.  They did begin to undergo real training during those six months and came out stronger as an army in June.

My tattered and dirty revolutionary soldier emerges into a spring meadow with the hard Valley Forge winter in his rear view mirror, looking to the future and the birth of a new nation.

I’m celebrating both the coming of Spring and the 250 anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, which changed the course of world history.

私の住む地域で私たちが経験したような、長く厳しい冬が訪れるたび、私は決まってジョージ・ワシントンとその兵士たちのことを思い起こします。彼らは1777年から1778年にかけて、ペンシルベニア州バレーフォージにて、寒さと欠乏に耐え忍んでいたのです。兵士たちは物資が極めて不足した状態で、骨まで凍てつくような寒さに加え、病気にも苦しめられました。しかし、この6ヶ月間の間に彼らは本格的な訓練を開始し、6月には軍としてより強固な組織へと生まれ変わってその地を後にしたのです。

私の作品に登場する、ボロボロになり泥にまみれた革命軍の兵士は、バレーフォージでの過酷な冬を背後に置き去りにし、春の野原へと歩み出します。その視線の先にあるのは、未来、そして新しい国家の誕生です。

私は、春の到来と、世界史の流れを一変させた「独立宣言」の250周年という、その両方を祝しているのです。
