“That dress is kawaii.” “Do you like my doll?” “Oh yes, Kawaii.” “That painting is Kawaii.” Everything is Kawaii, kawaii, kawaii.

The word Kawaii is now a cultural phenomenon in Japan. It began in

Japanese animation as an admiration of Western culture. The girl’s eyes are unnaturally large for the small mouth and nose. Kawaii means “cute” “small” “pure” “round” and has a second meaning of  “poor”

“need protection” “a little creepy”. This face image is somewhat immature, incomplete and uneven compared to the mature and finished proportions of beauty in the West.

The “Face” is one of the “structures” that humans are most interested in and this girl’s large eyes somehow captivate Japanese people.  They can’t  take their eyes off of her. They cannot ignore. Women love her even more than men. Kawaii has become the ‘go to’ word to use in many situations the way “interesting” is used in Western culture. It lets the speaker answer a question quickly without offending anyone.
